UK Assures Solomon Islands of Support

BRITISH Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Rt.Hon. Mark Field (MP) has made assurance to provide support to the Solomon Islands.

This was revealed during a courtesy call to the Prime Minister Rick Houenipwela (MP) by Rt. Hon. Field at the Office at the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Rt. Hon Field stated that the UK Government is ready to provide support to the Solomon Islands in any broader economic reforms and also on its fight against corruption.

In response, the Prime Minister Hon. Rick Houenipwela expressed his gratitude to the Rt. Hon Field.

The Prime Minister Hon. Houenipwela further stated his appreciation for UK’s significant contribution to the European Union in terms of development assistance.

He also acknowledged that UK’s contribution is channelled through the European Development Fund (EDF) under the European Union.

Hon. Rick Houenipwela also thanked the British Minister for UK’s support in Education such as providing scholarship for post-graduate studies through the UK Government’s international awards scheme known as the British Chevening Scholarships.

The Prime Minister additionally mentioned his desire to see an increase in the number of scholarship to Solomon Islanders suggesting that, “more scholarship awards should be given to Solomon Islanders and especially for Technical, Vocational Education and Training”, he said.

The meeting was also attended by senior Government officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
