AUSTRALIAN Federal Police (AFP) Deputy Commissioner (DC) Leanne Close, APM, along with Hon. Alick Maeba, Deputy Premier Malaita, His Excellency Roderick Brazier, Australian High Commissioner, Hon. Derrick Manauri, Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Commissioner RSIPF Mathew Varley and Commander Solomon Islands Police Development Program (SIPDP), John Tanti travelled to Auki in Malaita to formally open a purpose built Police Response Team (PRT) facility.
During her address, DC Close stated, “I am honoured to be here today to open this RSIPF Police Response Team Facility, the first one in the provinces to support the valuable work undertaken by the RSIPF.”
“Following on from the limited rearmament of the RSIPF on 8 May 2017, the need for a purpose built barracks accommodation became apparent to stage PRT operations and to reduce RSIPF costs when deploying PRT regionally. This supports the provincial policing model, similar to what was already in place in Honiara,” said DC Close.
The facility will provide a secure operating base to deploy specialist policing resources for major operations such as the National General Election. The provision of a classroom structure also gives the Solomon Islands Government and the RSIPF a suitable venue to deliver training and to conduct planning and briefing for future operations.
The opening of the facility supports the RSIPF’s continued journey towards building safer communities.
