THE oversight committee seated at the Prime Minister’s office which is chaired by the secretariat to the cabinet is seriously looking at various options if the country is to impose a complete ban on incoming international flights taking into consideration the various implications in the areas of trade, economy, and the legal implications.
Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr. Jimmy Rogers in responding to questions being asked at a talk-back show on Sunday stated that much has been done behind the scene to tackle the issue.
“The oversight committee has looked into all options that we could take ranging from a complete lockdown to self-quarantine and in between, there are a number of options which each has different implications,” Dr. Rogers said.
Dr. Rogers revealed that currently, the oversight committee is conducting assessments on various options if the country is to impose a complete ban or lockdown.
“I want to assure the public that the oversight committee is conducting assessments on the Legal implications associated with the options, conducting Economic assessments that is to make sure there is economic viability in these options, Social assessments – that is to see what the impact on the public is.
“We have to learn from what the other countries are facing or what their strategies are in order that we can make informed decisions which will not undermine our capacity to respond and deal with the issue at hand.
“The Committee has also got the Agriculture and the Fisheries Ministries to assess food capability in the country, assess shops operating in the country see what are in the shops, how long will the supply last because if we are talking lockdown there will also be no imports,” Dr. Rogers said.
Meanwhile, The Secretary to PM assures the public that the Government is putting things in place and is expecting feedbacks and information over the next week to make an informed decision thereafter.
“I want to assure the nation that we are doing all these assessments to help the country move forward.”
In the meantime, the immigration department within the Ministry of Commerce, Industries, Labour, and Immigrations is working together with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) together with the Oversight Committee within the PM Office to look into when and how to go into the direction of a complete Lockdown.
